When to go
The best time to trek to Everest Base Camp
Spring and autumn windows beat the monsoon and the deep winter cold.
The EBC trek through the year
| Season | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Spring (Mar–May) | Stable weather, warming, popular — a prime window |
| Summer (Jun–Aug) | Monsoon: cloud, rain, obscured views |
| Autumn (late Sep–Nov) | Crisp, clear skies — the top season |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | Very cold and quiet; some routes tougher |
Two prime seasons
The Everest Base Camp trek has two clear best windows: spring, roughly March to May, and autumn, roughly late September to November. In both, the weather is at its most stable and the mountain views their clearest, which is exactly what you want on a trek defined by its scenery and dependent on safe conditions at altitude. These are the seasons the vast majority of trekkers target.
Autumn's clear skies
Autumn is often considered the very best time, with crisp, clear post-monsoon skies delivering superb visibility of Everest and its neighbours, and comfortable trekking temperatures at lower elevations. It's also the most popular season, so the trails and teahouses are busier — a trade-off for the reliably stunning views and settled weather that make autumn so prized.
Spring's warmth and colour
Spring is the other prime window, with warming temperatures, longer days and, lower down, rhododendron forests in bloom. It's also the main mountaineering season, so Base Camp is alive with summit expeditions, adding to the atmosphere. Weather is generally stable, though higher clouds can build later in the season. For many, spring's warmth and the buzz at Base Camp make it a favourite.
Avoiding monsoon and deep winter
Summer, roughly June to August, brings the monsoon — cloud, rain, leeches lower down and frequently obscured mountain views — making it the least suitable time. Winter, December to February, offers clear skies and solitude but brutal cold at altitude, with some higher routes harder or riskier. Both are trekked by the hardy, but most people are wise to stick to spring or autumn.
Timing your trek
For the best combination of stable weather, clear views and manageable conditions, plan your Everest Base Camp trek for spring or autumn, booking ahead for these busy windows. Whichever you choose, expect cold at the highest points and pack accordingly. Get the season right and the trek rewards you with the clearest possible views of the world's highest mountains.
